Time flies when you're working hard! , by Mr Gill

Date: 23rd Sep 2016 @ 2:45pm

I can't believe that we are already three weeks in to our new school year! Time flies when you're working hard.

This week has been the best yet. In maths, we have been putting our addition and subtraction skills to the test using the formal column method. The children really have impressed me with this and have got some more questions to complete for their homework. Why not work with them over the weekend so that they can impress you to!

Our English lessons have been a particular highlight for me. We have been writing a letter from the perspective of Duncan to those cheeky crayons! The work the children have produced has been AMAZING! I will post some examples of the great work on Monday.

In our science lesson we have been classifying animals in preparation for our bug hunt in the forthcoming weeks. The children are really excited about this!

We have finished the week in a great way today by playing our clarinets in our music lesson.

Well done to Lucy who won our star badge award this week for a fabulous piece of writing!

Challenge Accepted! , by Miss Kean

Date: 23rd Sep 2016 @ 1:43pm

This week’s blog is written by Ella:

This week my class have been learning about diaries, we have been writing a diary for the character of the Goldfish from the book “The day I swapped my Dad for Two Goldfish.” We have thought about how we would feel if we were suddenly taken from our home and moved somewhere new, just like the fish was when he was taken from the pet shop. My favourite part was when we drew pictures to show how the goldfish felt.

In topic we have been learning all about the Stone Age, we learnt that they killed animals using stone tools and then ate them. I loved making a TV advert with my friends for a bow and arrow.

As a class we have started to think about the school ‘planting challenge’ we are going to decorate our own planter in the school playground and try to win a prize for the best one. I can’t wait to watch the flowers grow. It will be my job to water them.

Sensory Maths, by Miss Glover

Date: 23rd Sep 2016 @ 8:33am

During our morning provision children had to find numbers hidden within a sensory bottle and record some equations linked to the number they found. These two experts worked on their equations independently! Look at their fabulous work.

Stone Age TV Advert, by Mr Warner

Date: 22nd Sep 2016 @ 5:34pm

We have launched our History topic based on the Stone Age today. The children have worked hard to produce TV adverts in an effort to try and sell Stone Age bow and arrows. They planned the adverts in small groups, then had a go at filming on iPads. They showed great enthusiasm and everyone played their part to bring the adverts together.

Welcome assembly, by Miss Ellis

Date: 22nd Sep 2016 @ 1:08pm

Year six presented a superb assembly this week, with singing, acting, poetry and bible readings all on display. The assembly was to welcome the new children into reception and share our school values with them.

Afterwards we spent some time getting to know our buddies and giving them cards which were handmade by year six.

We are looking forward to more events with year six and reception through the year.

Researching Landmarks, by Miss Hope

Date: 20th Sep 2016 @ 12:05am

This week in our literacy lessons we have been writing a story in the style of Steve Antony's book "The Queen's Handbag".  To do this we had to choose some landmarks from the United Kingdom to include in our stories. We used photographs and iPads to help us research in formation for our story. All the children worked really hard and found out facts about places like the London Eye, Big Ben, the Angel of the North and Hadrian's Wall.

French fun with Mrs Taylor, by Miss Glover

Date: 18th Sep 2016 @ 2:16pm

Q1 had French for the first time in Year One this week.

They had so much fun with Mrs Taylor, the children learnt some actions to go with a French song which was all based on French greetings.

Bien joué Q1!!

Why don't you practice at home?  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=atNkI6QFZ50

Maths Meetings, by Mr Warner

Date: 18th Sep 2016 @ 1:45pm

The children are really enjoying Maths Meeting time which involves lots of quick mental calcualtions as well as trying to solve puzzles. Something which proved to be particularly popular last week was the chance to sit in the hot seat and take questions about the mystery number.

The Day the Crayons Quit , by Mr Gill

Date: 17th Sep 2016 @ 4:27pm

Our reading focus for this half term is the brilliant book 'The Day the Crayons Quit' which is written by Drew Daywalt and illustrated by Oliver Jeffers. The children are loving the book so far and have produced some great writing based around some of the characters from the book this week. I am hoping for many more good pieces of writing to come from it. I can't wait for the children to read about the 'Peach Crayon'... They are in for a real treat!

There have been some strange things going on around our classroom this week. We have been recieving letters from a rogue pack of crayons who are disgruntled to say the least. Take a look at what they have been saying. Monday morning should be an interesting one.

Happy reading!

All our fantastic Star Badge winners

I think we've earned this weekend! , by Mr Houltram

Date: 16th Sep 2016 @ 8:11pm

Wow! Q4 will sleep very well this weekend. What a week of learning it's been!

We are still busy with four-digit numbers and can now round to 10, 100 and 1000. Not only that, but we can also find 1000 more or less for four-digit numbers. We have been looking at sequences of 7, 9, 25 and 1000 and have even been  solving some tricky word problems!

We tucked into our new text and now know what all the fuss was about. Duncan has been working those crayons too hard. We used thesauruses to think of synonyms for how tired and angry they were. Some of the words we found included: livid, fragile, rickety, lethargic, frustrated, enraged... The list goes on. Some of us even included the word 'apoplectic' in our fact-files! (It means angry incase you didn't know) ;)

If that wasn't enough, we started our new History topic 'The Romans'. We explored the legend of 'Romulus and Remus' and the story about the birth of Rome. We created some fantastic storyboards to depict the story.

This week was also the first week of spellings! A huge well done to Abigail, Enola, Maddison, Matthew, Ruby, Sophie and Zach, who all scored 100%!!

Our Star Badge Winner this week was Daigen, who has shown a fantastic attitude towards all aspects of learning. Daigen also earned the most Dojos along with Izzy. Well done to you both!

And relax... It's the weekend and we can all enjoy a well-earned rest. Don't forget to check back next week to see what we've been up to!

Until then, it's bye from Q4! :)

Another busy week..., by Miss Hughes

Date: 16th Sep 2016 @ 4:47pm

My poor class haven't stopped this week! We have managed to cram in - a football lesson, a dance lesson, a squash lesson, an extended writing session,  two science lessons, a french lesson, several Writing, Reading and Maths lessons... and a few tests have been thrown in as well! On top of all this, Year 6 have also been practising their assembly, which will be on Monday at 9:15 (all Y6 parents welcome! We would love to see you there).

What I have learnt about my class over the past couple of weeks is that they are always happy, do not stop smiling and are always keen to work. Let's hope we can keep this up all year! You are fabulous!

Have a great weekend x

Roald Dahl's birthday bash! , by Miss Kean

Date: 16th Sep 2016 @ 1:34pm

This week’s blog is written by Isaac Heyes:

This week we have been reading “The day I swapped my dad for two goldfish.” It was funny at the end.  We watch the Matilda Musical on Tuesday to celebrate Roald Dahl’s 100th Birthday I thought it was quite fun to watch.  We also had French with Mrs Taylor doing greeting songs and met her new puppet Jacque. Some children did dough disco club with Miss Kean, we made play dough and put colour and glitter in it, it got a bit messy.

100th Birthday celebrations, by Mr Warner

Date: 14th Sep 2016 @ 9:51pm

In an effort to promote our love of reading Q3 took part in a live web event on Tuesday to celebrate the 100th birthday of Roald Dahl. The children explored all sorts of facts about him and his life befire taking part in a quiz, which asked questions about various characters in his books.

We later joined the live event, which included a reading by David Walliamsand a live performance of part of the Matilda musical.

We ended the day with some quiet time, reading a selection of Roald Dahl books.

Would you save Wilbur the pig? , by Miss Stubbs

Date: 14th Sep 2016 @ 10:09am

P5 have been reading Charlotte's Web as part of their English topic. Yesterday the children had to persuade Gabriella and Grace to either save Wilbur the pig or kill him, depending on which side they were stood on in conscience alley.

They children generated excellent arguments for and against. We even had comments about bacon, which tempted Grace.

Take a look at our conscience alley.

Trust, by Mrs Kellett

Date: 12th Sep 2016 @ 9:34pm

Today, we started our week looking at trust in our worship.  Katie from year six absolutely blew me away with her explanation....'Trust is glue that holds relationships together'  She is absolutely right of course.  I have attached the powerpoint we looked at.  I told the story about Blondin - the tightrope walker!  It really opened up discussion and reflection.

Raising Aspirations , by Mrs Kellett

Date: 11th Sep 2016 @ 10:25pm

Aspiration is one of our key curriculum drivers. I'm so glad that we are working with St Helens Chamber again this year. It so important that our children learn all about the world of work. I've uploaded some photos of our Careers Fair we held in July. 21 different businesses came to tell our children what it is like to work at their company. It was a great afternoon.

OFF TO A GREAT START! , by Miss Hope

Date: 10th Sep 2016 @ 9:51am

We have had a great first week in Q2. We have been reading a book by Steve Antony called the Queen's Handbag. Through this super story we have learnt about the 4 countries of the United Kingdom, their capital cities and some of sthe great landmarks around Great Britain. We will be using this story again next week in our literacy work.

In our maths work we have been learning about place value in numbers up to 100.  The children are keen to show off their maths skills.

Well done children Miss Hope is really looking forward to sharing our learning adventure this year.

Welcome to Q6!, by Miss Hughes

Date: 9th Sep 2016 @ 5:28pm

I'd like to say a huge, happy welcome to my lovely new class and their families.

Well, what a week we've had! It's been so busy - does not feel like we've had 6 weeks off!

We have been preparing for our 'School Values' assembly which is in a couple of weeks time. We feel it is important to share our school values to remind everyone what makes us so special and unique at Queen's Park. Our values underpin the ethos of our school and we feel we have a responsibility to share them with the Reception children as they embark on their Queen's Park journey. We are also excited to introduce ourselves to our buddies, who we will be taking under our wing, being there for them and helping them to grow!

In English, we have been looking at The Lady of Shalott by Alfred Lord Tennyson. We have done a great job analysing it and we have dealt with some very tricky vocabulary! In Maths we have been working on our Place Value up to millions... we will soon be ready to work with numbers up to a billion - and use our Maths Mastery approach to challenge ourselves to some problem solving and reasoning activities.

We enjoyed reading Lamb to the Slaughter by Roald Dahl in Guided Reading - it is Roald Dahl day coming up and we wanted to celebrate the incredible stories he has written, including those short stories which were aimed at adults. We have been able to sequence the story, as well as discuss Roald Dahl's use of language and the impact it has on us as a reader. We actually felt really sorry for Mary Maloney - we laughed along with her at the very end of the story!

Busy busy busy... but loads of fun!

Bring on the rest of the year! It's going to be a GREAT one :)

Miss Hughes and Q6 x
